Dan Billado of Swanton built a custom gun using parts that friends and hospital staff helped acquire while he awaited a heart transplant after being diagnosed with a rare heart condition. Daniel Billado was discharged from the hospital after an anxious 10-month stay. Still, he was lucky. Currently there are about 3,000 individuals waiting for heart transplants, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.“Throughout those months, before the transplant came in, my doctors kept telling me that I might not make it,” Billado said. “Eventually, I accepted that.” While Billado was in the hospital, his doctor decided to begin a project that would not only give Billado something to occupy his time, but to also give him a gift after he was released from the hospital. Knowing Billado was an avid hunter and firearm enthusiast, his doctor had him design a custom rifle for hunting and shooting competitions. With the help of contributions from several people and companies, the doctor assembled the competition rifle with parts that would ordinarily take a long time and a considerable amount of money to obtain.
